How to convince non-divers to dive

THE TOP 10 MOST FREQUENT ARGUMENTS WHY PEOPLE WON’T GO DIVING! HERE IS HOW TO CONVINCE THEM TO GIVE IT A TRY.

Your girl friend is afraid of sharks? Your buddy feels diving is dangerous? Do you want to convince your friend to come diving with you? However, they keep coming up with ridiculous points why they can't do it? Follow our extensive list to help them understand why they NEED to become your new buddy!

1. I AM SCARED OF SHARKS

Sharks are actually not at all the vicious monsters the media portrays them to be. True, they are ocean predators. However, humans are definitely not on their menu and with the correct behaviour you are absolutely safe to dive with them. Did you know, that more people die from being struck by lightening than by shark attacks? Dogs, snakes, crocodiles and even hippos kill more people every year than sharks! Still not convinced? No problem, there are of course plenty of spots and dive sites where you are NOT going to meet sharks. Just ask us ;)

2. DIVING IS DANGEROUS

Diving is certainly not dangerous, if done properly! If you practice safe diving, know your equipment and your skills, it is a very safe recreational sport. Divers Alert Network (DAN) reported an approximate fatality rate of 2 per 100,000 participants, whereas jogging had 13 fatalities per 100,000 participants and horseback riding had even 128 per 100,000 participants! Before you go scuba diving you have to conclude a dive course. This means that you get comfortable with all risky situations like running out of air or having problems equalizing. Only after completing the course you are ready to go diving. At the beginners level you are entitled to dive up to 18 meters.

3. DIVING IS COMPLICATED

The equipment and all the rules can seem daunting in the beginning. But rest assured, it's actually all fairly straight forward. Your scuba diving instructor will explain everything you need to know and in the end you will notice that diving is like driving or riding a bike – once you get the hang of it, it's something you can do without even having to think about. The best! Diving is actually a ‘sport’ where you can totally forget about everything. It is like yoga, just in the water. You tend to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, whilte being deeply connected to your breath.

4. DIVING IS TOO EXPENSIVE

Ok, it can't be denied that diving is not the cheapest hobby. But depending on where you go you can get incredible deals. Thailand, Malaysia and even Egypt are considered some of the cheapest destinations but also best beginners destinations to get started. Equipment can always be rented in the beginning and second hand gear is also an option!

5. FISH ARE BORING

Umm, wait a minute, have you even SEEN what's down there in the ocean? There is really something for everybody! Manta rays, turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, seahorses, barracudas, corals, the list literally goes on an on! Did you know that our earth is covered by over 70% of water? Don't miss out on exploring this huge mysterious world and its inhabitants!

6. I AM TOO FAT FOR DIVING

As long as your extra kilos don't cause you any illness like asthma, diabetes, heart or respiratory problems you definitely CAN dive, ESPECIALLY if you are on the heavier side. Once you hit the water you basically become weightless and the number on your scale doesn't matter at all! Diving won't put any extra pressure on your joints and you can enjoy this sport safely. And who knows, you might even shed those extra pounds while diving. Did you know that the average dive burns up to 600 calories?

7. I AM TOO OLD FOR DIVING

Age is just a number, even when it comes to diving! If you don't suffer from any illnesses and generally feel fit and healthy then age should not stop you from diving. If you still don't believe it then check out this video where a 95 year old still rocks the underwater world! > Watch the video here

8. I CAN’T HOLD MY BREATH THAT LONG

Perfect! Why? Because when scuba diving you are not even supposed to hold your breath, EVER! Not even a second! You breathe compressed air with the regulator (the funny mouth piece) from a tank on your back. You also have a Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG), a little thing that looks like a pocket watch. On your SPG you can check how much air you have left to make sure that you don't run out.

9. I DON’T LIKE COLD WATER

Then you are not alone! Many divers don't like cold water. Luckily, some of the best dive spots in the world are also those with the warmest temperatures. Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives, Egypt, Mexico, and MANY more, have water temperatures up to 29 C which feels almost like your bathtub at home!

10. MY EARS HURT WHEN I SNORKEL AND GO DEEP

Yeah but they won't if you EQUALIZE! Wait, what's that? Have you ever been on a flight and felt that POP feeling in your ear during lift-off or landing? That's your ears equalizing. When descending on a dive they sometimes need a little help from you. Don't worry, it's super easy: close your mouth, pinch your nose and try to breath out. Once you feel that POP you know you did it right, you just equalized! Congratulations!
Tell us which excuses you have heard from non-divers!

Happy bubbles,
